[MPC Live] Ability to assign Midi channel and input port or controller to specific tracks

Currently if you connect MIDI keyboard via MIDI ports or USB, it will play the active track you have selected. And it's the same track you are playing with MPC's pads. It would be a great feature to assign MIDI keyboard to other track and play it as multi timbral synth. So for example you can play drums or clips with the pads on currently selected track and some melodies with your MIDI keyboard on another track, which is listening only to say channel 1 from USB MIDI controller.

    I like my MPC but it has a has a really poor MIDI implementation. The MPC Live only recognizes all CC# and note data as pertaining to the current track you have selected. It's stupid and Akai really needs to update this. Each track should be a different midi channel so you can control them individually. This would allow you to hook up a MIDI controller like their Midimix and have faders control different volume and pan controls from one location without having to select the track first. Also right now the same limitation hinders having a different controller for different tracks. For example, you can't to have a dedicated keyboard controller to play keys while having the MPC Live pads for adding samples or drums on. Both will only play the track that that the MPC has currently selected. It's stupid.

    +1, would be very helpful to have MIDI input control on Channel Mixer functions such as volume levels, pans and sends

    Now is 12.02.2018 whether any new information can Akai fix these basics like Midi (multimbral midi in/out)? Begin with the patience ending with Akai. Or is it better to put a direct sales notice to the magazine?

    Akai staff, comments please.

    Sad Akai does not hear the multiple petitions in this way from the users which should be easy to implement (remind that even the early 80's midi modules do that)
    Multitimbral operation is a "must", so improve this instead unnecessary "art" in expansions.

    Hi,

    Would it be at all possible that someone from Akai could give us an update on this ?
    I'm assuming that as ' it's under consideration' then it is at least possible?

    If it's not possible it would be polite to put us out of our misery and if it is possible maybe an approximate time it could be implemented by?
    Thank you very much for your time.

    Im using my MPC with other hardware, just run into the problem where Im not able to select the channel the MPC receives midi on. It just seems to take from every channel.

    Seems like such a basic thing that practically every midi device seems to do.

    I would like to select the midi channel that it listens too please

    Your right almost every device in history apart from the 'flagship' akai machine..

    It's either broken, very unfinished or incorrectly designed, I'm hoping unfinished but seeing nobody from Akai is polite enough to tell us I'm guessing broken for now.

    Yea we keep complaining and they keep not saying if they are even planing to implement it.

    I was so enthralled by the rechargeable battery I bought the MPC Live right when it came out. It never even occurred to me that this machine would NOT be multitimbral.

    So then I figured ok, they are still locking down the software so I guess it will be in 2.1

    Needless to say I am regretting buying it now and wish I had just kept my MPC1000

    You are legally entitled to a refund, any machine with 6 midi ports absolutely gives the impression its a serious machine when it comes to MIDI .
    It's not your fault that they didn't design their product properly.

    I would ask for a refund on the grounds the machine does not work properly.

    It's a con trick really when you think about it.
    Personally I would take Akai to court if they refused me a refund over this.

    It reminds me of cheap hifi in the 80's that had buttons that didn't actually do anything or things that looked like they did something but were just pieces of plastic, this is not far off what all those midi ports are.

    Hey look at our flagship sampler with all these midi ports on the back...they don't work mind you, just to reel you in to thinking its a pro machine.

    There are a lot of music tech publications these days who are looking for something to write about. Personally, I'd forget Akai and go to them with the story. It's not fair that people are still buying these when there's no resolution in sight.

    I'd do it myself, but I'm not an owner as this thread stopped me buying.

    For example, Ask Audio just ran this about an issue with the Roland TR8S:

    Its not much work to implement, at least for the basic input issue that i'm having.

    Just a selector in settings:
    Midi Input: [Off, To Current Track, Multitimbral]

    Then hypothetical code as simple as this:

    onMidiReceivedFromPort(channel, byte) {
    if(Settings.midiInputPreference != "Off") {
    if(Settings.midiInputPreference == "Track")
    sendMidiToTrack(CURRENT, byte)
    else
    sendMidiToTrack(channel, byte)
    }
    }

    Akai: If you need extra developer hands to come in an fix midi and implement side-chain and other stuff, I do know how to code these things (even Audio/DSP), so look me up if everyone else in the team is tied up with other tasks. I would be happy to discuss freelancing to help support the product.

  • Hey everybody,

    I would love to see this functionality implemented into the hardware as well. At this time, I have no information about the implementation of multi-timbral MIDI functions and I do not receive updates regarding products before they are released. As you know, announcements about updates and new releases will not be published here on the community forum. If you are interested in hearing about new information from the company as soon as it's released, here are a few ways that you can stay ahead of the curve:

    • Follow the company on Facebook.

    • Follow the company on Twitter.

    • Sign up for the company newsletter.

    • Check the website homepage or product pages.

    Until information exists in one or all of these places, there will not be any official announcements or discussions about future releases here on the community forum.

    With all of that being said, we appreciate your interest in our company and will continue to strive to improve on our products and customer experience. If any information is released through these channels or if I receive news about this functionality, I will be happy to help spread the information here in the community.

    • I am of course wrong here, there *is* information under the heading saying the this is "under consideration". Though the OP is 10 months (that's right, almost a year) old, so that message could be interpreted any which way, including being 'ignored', no?
    • I agree totally with this. I do really like the product. I have both Live and MPC-X. We understand that companies sometimes like to keep secret what is coming next as to avoid competitors keeping ahead of them. But don't think this falls into that category.

      I do hope that Nick is empowered a little more and kept in the loop as the comments provided here are intended to help the product and the community and the company.

    Do we have to resort to a petition to get an answer?

    The way things used to work is that companies released products that worked, they would go out of business if they released faulty products.
    Problem was they were then set in stone and couldn't evolve.

    Now companies can get away with releasing faulty or unfinished products on the proviso they fix and update products very soon after.
    We put up with this because the products can hopefully evolve and get better.

    So companies these days not only get our money but also we beta test for free because we hope things get better.
    So when a company takes our money, our ideas, feedback and countless 000's of hours worth of testing we REALLY are due a pat on the back, some feedback or just a god damn reply otherwise the company is taking the friggin piss out of us and don't deserve to be in business anymore.

    Fortunately for Akai and I really do mean fortunately, we put up with this unfair treatment because a lot of us have faith in the MPC thing and just want good instruments at our fingertips.

    Please Akai don't take us for granted much longer, don't ignore us and don't abuse the fortunate position your in, it will do irrevocable harm on your reputation and company.

  • I’m confused
    Good morning everyone.
    I'm happy to see so many other people want the same thing although it's sad to even think that this was not implemented before these two units came out! They are stand-alone units!!! Correct me if I am wrong the MPC 60 Mach 2 did this way back then!!!
    So, how is it that in 2017 these units don't do such a simple task! This is a letter I wrote to AKAI:

    Hello,
    I am a music producer. I have been a supporter of the AKAI brand since 1991 with my purchase of the MPC 60 II.
    Over the years I have purchased many incarnations of the AKAI drum sampling machines.
    As an owner of the MPC X, I have had many discussions in various forums with fellow AKAI users and we've arrived at similar conclusions.
    There are features missing from the new MPC X / Live that existed in the earlier standalone hardware versions of the MPC drum sampler that would facilitate our ability to create music in the robust fashion that we have grown accustomed to as AKAI users.

    Feature requests:

    1-In standalone mode: to be able to use sounds that are resident on an MPC pad and assign that pad a MIDI channel or assign that track to MIDI channel and sequence those sounds into any software DAW.

    I have a setup that uses various pieces of outboard gear, racks, keyboards etc. Midi connectivity through my DAW is crucial.

    2-The ability to sample/record into the MPC while using the MPC X / Live as a 'plug-in' inside of a DAW.

    If you use sampling as your main way of getting sounds into the MPC X / Live (which myself and other users do) you are losing an essential function,
    I prefer to use the MPC instead of another soundcard for my audio sampling needs.

    As a forerunner of sampling innovation for many years, I believe the minds at Akai are very capable of handling the challenge.
    I enjoy the feel and sound of AKAI products. I am also a producer who values streamlined workflows and timely submissions of my projects.
    These features would be instrumental (pun intended) to increase my production output.
    I have faith in your abilities as a company to further develop a product that has, and continues to be, worthy of inclusion in the AKAI Professional legacy.

    Thank you for your time.

    What do you all think? Do you think AKAI will do something about this?
    • The bottom line is always its users/customers, and we obviously need/want it, so either they resolve it, or we will be forced elsewhere.

      The more tragic path of situations like this, is loss of credibility as a company, which is a shame because they are one of the few still standing companies that do keep trying new things, and that they could easily avoid that simply by communicating their progress.

      Anyways, I would actually be strangely surprised if they haven't already implemented prototypes of possible solutions. It is obvious that there are problems that take time to resolve.

      Also, I would have absolutely no objection to being a guinea pig for helping advancing the unit, if that is what is needed.

    If Akai won't provide Multitimbral MIDI support, why not give us a simple incoming MIDI filter so that it responds on one channel instead of forced Omni?

    Live/X sound engine is vast.. but the MIDI spec is so incomplete that I've relegated this to use as a "sample playback and sound programming module* under control of my Elektron gear.

    The lack of a hardware through or configurable soft-through is limiting and I bought a MIDI splitter to deal with that. However In the studio this weekend I realized that this was a waste of money because my Live is stuck in Omni mode and therefore responding on every MIDI channel.

    All other synths in my studio have this basic capability to configure channels. It's just one of those fundamental things that should be there on any equipment with a MIDI input.

    Akai Devs - if we can't have a proper MIDI specification in the next firmware release, can we at least have a MIDI FILTER so that it responds only on one MIDI channel globally? Surely - this can only be a few lines of code and another setting in the interface somewhere.

    IF MIDI_CHANNEL_RECEIVED_NOTE = GLOBAL_MIDI_CHANNEL
    then...

    This thing doesn't even have an incoming midi filter!? Hello? Akai? Yehhhh you're selling a "PROFESSIONAL" instrument without basic MIDI capabilities in place.

    I got my other sequencers "accidentally" triggering MPC programs & getting recorded into every Fn track cause this is on the same port as 3 other synths. You can be DANG SURE I'm not about to rewire my entire studio w 17 synths & 4 sequencers because YALL can't put out a legit pro product.

    It was a good try but still these new ones are STILL not ready for real production studios. Kinda sad really, was nice having the touch screen. Oh well!
