AKAI EIE Pro: distortion, pops, blue screens

I have an AKAI EIE Pro for almost a year now, and I'm far from pleased with it. I was hoping AKAI was still working on the Windows drivers, and occassionally there was an update (got 24-bit/96kHz support only recently), but it's still not working as it should. Not at all actually. I'm getting random pops, the sound gets distorted after some time or simply a blue screen (lost hours of work) saying there's an issue with the akaieiea.sys. It happens on all drivers and in several DAW's (ie. Ableton Live, Cubase, Studio One) and programs (ie. Chrome).

The interface looks good, but how about making it work good too?

Here's some specs of my laptop:
Windows 8.1 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4700MQ @ 2.40GHz (8 CPUs)
8GB of RAM
500GB SSD
43 people have
this problem

It's the unit. Send it back, ditch it and get a Focusrite.

    • Update, friend of mine who bought the EIE pro on my recommendation and had major problems with it just got his focusrite set up and now everything runs flawlessly. First time in a year. No problems on either mac or Pc (he had problems on both). his EIE pro is now going up on craigslist to anyone who will take it for 50 bucks. Zoran... I know you want to be an Akai cheer leader.... hell I own enough akai/m-audio stuff to and would love for it to all work flawless. However out of the akai/m-audio gear I have, 3/4ths have failed to work properly or have died within 1 year of purchase. The only Inmusic brands product I have on my desk top which I don't want to throw out the window is the APC 40. What does that tell you?
    • If everything works out i'm getting a focusrite tommorow, secondhand from a guy in town, i'll pick it up at his place, No more wurry's

  • I have the same problem with this setup:

    Windows 8.1 - 64bit
    Intel i7 - 4790k
    Driver EIE Pro: 2.9.55
    Firmware : 1.0.4

This device works perfectly with windows 7 (laptop), I suppose the issues come from the driver.

Please , Akai, release a new driver compatible with win 8.1...right now the EIE is useless .. !!

    • BTW i have ths clipping an popping thing going on, for the rest it works fine. had for 4 years and never really did work fine so...... i'm FED UP
    • I have to admit, making music has been an off and on thing for me. Always been between places. And i don't know i think i might've been to stubbern, but indeed in win 7 i don't really having that much trouble with it. Freaky shit!

  • Don't hold your breath Simone for a new driver to solve the problem. I have the EIE Pro here and while it works now after being returned for a replacement unit - having died completely in the middle of a production session - the problem is the product (hardware).
Ditch the unit anyway you can and get a focusrite.

    • So if i understand, you haven't ditched your self? That's funny... No offense. But at least you had the chance replacing it. Do you own that hybrid 16-24 bit now, thats a sexy black and blue thing.
Me I'm still considering punchi' it until it's black and blue ;)

  • It's the company in general. This is InMusic Brands after all. They own M-Audio too, another company/division that doesn't really care to support their products. I have an M-Audio i/o box as well as the AKAI EIE Pro. The M-Audio box always had problems with popping, locking the audio engine, clicks, drivers failing requiring reboots, complete system lock ups, etc. etc. etc.

So with all due respect Zoran, the product is the problem and the company is the root cause. Drivers/Hardware/Company that makes it. It's a horrible combination because M-Audio was out to lunch for driver support in newer OSs and now both M-Audio and Akai seem to have hardware issues. My unit was fine - sure, up until it turned into a brick. Just boom, dead in the middle of a session.

I've spoken with other users on the side about similar problems with both Akai and M-Audio products. Considering its all made in china anyway - probably in the exact same plant. So with that said, do you not think its possible that the problem is ultimately hardware related?

    • No, I don't hate anyone.. but MS won't release a USB fix for Windows 8.
Until they do we have to muck around.
In Windows 7 the USB fix solved every issue.
    • Not when -like in my case- you can't turn off the USB ports nor the driver because the USB 3.0 hub also covers the USB 2 ports.

  • Guys, I think Zoran is telling the truth.
I received an opinion from an italian product specialist (of akai eie pro) and he tells me the same things. the problem is the incompatibility of the USB port with USB chip of the akai pro (or something like that)...

  • I'm done with this forum.

PLEASE BE ADVISED, IF AKAI SAYS IT'S YOUR COMPUTER IT'S NOT. IT'S THEIR DRIVERS. TAKE THE EIE PRO BACK AND BUY A DIFFERENT INTERFACE. IT WORKED FOR SEVERAL PEOPLE HERE.

I've worked with computers long enough to know that there is no reason to frustrate yourself trying to get a buggy piece of hardware working when there are plenty of better options out there that will work out of the box.

I had all the described problems in here, I messed with is for a few days, talked to Akai's tech support and got no where, and took mine back and got a Focusrite which worked beautifully out of the box. I'm not a computer idiot here, I do this for a living.

For the people that want to apologize for Akai or call me an idiot, you can continue lying to yourselves. Go look at the reviews for this product on nearly every site that sells it. There is obviously a problem and it's obvious that users aren't getting the help they need.

    • I've found a page on the Avid site that says that I need a secondary hard drive to run playback than my built-in one and it can't be a USB drive. That doesn't make any sense seeing as I have used Pro Tools before without an additional hard drive; also this is inconvenient as that means I have to go pay for the installation of another hard drive into my computer just for the stupid thing to play properly. Is this part of an update?
    • It doesn't make sense by any standard whatsoever.

I've managed to figure out the problem with the BOD, at least for my computer. Apparently you have to disconnect it from the internet while testing it. Also uncheck the box in the Speakers Properties menu that says "Give exclusive mode appications priority" if you're still having issues. Pro Tools is still having distortion after this though, so there are some settings on there that need changing. I just don't know what they are, though I've tried pretty much everything Express allows me to change in the playback engine.
So yeah, instead of having to disconnect certain specific things like Zoran was suggesting (which doesn't work), just disconnect the internet altogether. It's simpler, though inconvenient for other tasks for obvious reasons.

    • If you're used to Pro tools, use it. Reaper was more an idea cause it's very soft on the hardware. I sense that you only use midi/VSTi, which should be no problems in PT. Did you find out how to get the buzzing off in Pro Tools?
    • I saw on the task manager that it still uses up a lot of power, so I didn't even bother with it. That's why I'm wondering what I should do to increase my computer's performance.

  • Hello, I have my unit for some time now and what I cannot understand is - why, when I have my Ableton running, all other sounds are became disabled (in browser, audio/video player, etc.)?
I mean, ASIO EIE Pro supposed to be full-duplex sound card.
There is more - when I shut down Ableton in order to listen for an .mp3 file in player, for example, it starts to play (also I hear clicks when sound card switches between 48k and 44,1k modes presumably), but then sound freezes almost immediately with a glitch, and then I have to reload sound card manually.

Also, in Ableton card freezes briefly every time new VST starts to play. Changing buffer size in AKAI control panel doesn't do any good.

    • Still a bit odd you need 1024 samples on such a powerful computer.
Ableton chewing on the computers resources?
    • I really don't know who to blame in this case : ] Using x64 Ableton with x64 VST. it may be my miniITX motherboard with at least 1-year old drivers update, but still..

  • I’m frustrated
I've turned mine in for Servicing, After 30 minutes to an hour its starts blaring static. No, its not my PC. using an HP 8440p (USB 2, upgraded to SSD) with fresh install of win 8.1. Also tried with an old MacBook pro, unit is less than a year old, I hope the repaired/refurbed unit doesn't do this. When it worked it worked really well. Super low latency and no noise.

  • It works for me. I tested an Akai EIE Pro several weeks ago. Used the new driver: 2.9.55 | windows. Firmware update (very important): 104 | windows. The AKAI worked in Reaper and Adobe Audition 3.01. I turn off all system sounds. Completely. Don't want any Windows 8 bit sound to take down recording level quality. Run all sounds through two PCI Layla 3G Echo Audio soundcards. With EIE Pro, in Adobe Audition, I setup Audio Hardware with Asio4All. 96kHz 32bit. Driver: ASIO4ALL_2_12_English.exe. I also run driver: echo3g_setup_8.6.exe - for the Layla3G's. Get great mixing consoles from Echo Audio - ins/ outs of trks / levels (something Akai ought to have) during rec / plybk. Plug guitar into Ch 1 of Akai. Audio outs go to 1-2-3-4 channels of my analog mixing board I use for PC playback. Trks 1/2 (Akai / Mix board) are AKAI inputs. Trks 3/4 are outputs - from my PC - to Akai as USB Inputs carrying the stereo output mix (trks 3/4) from multitrack. I set trks 1-2-3-4 recording in Adobe Audition multitrack as Mono Inputs using Akai 2.9.55 driver. Lower right audio knob on Akai is set to 12 noon (balancing inputs vs send from PC plybk). A few times I might get a pause during recording. My PC? Before I updated firmware, huge brick wall noise glitches happened. Not anymore after the 104 firmware update. My PC is self built AMD 2.2 GHz CPU 2 GB Ram Win 7 Pro 32 bit. Bought Akai for laptop live drum recording. Glad to hear it works well there with Win 7. Good luck!!!

  • Having BSOD issues with akaieieu.sys as well. Win 7, 64 bit. This is the only long thread I can find on the internet discussing this problem - I will link to it in my review of the EIE Pro once I'm done, because both the problem with the drivers/hardware and lack of communication with Akai are both red flags to me.

I'd like to have a fix before I'm done reviewing the unit, I looks fantastic and when it DOES work I like it quite a bit! But with it causing my computer to hang, BSOD, or often continue working normally but BSOD much later in the day when I try to shut my computer off (whether the interface is turned on or off) is just too much when other interfaces work right out of the box and offer the same or better features.

I hope to hear from Akai, even if you don't give us updated drivers, 20-30 screenshots of you reproducing the problem on different machines would be reassuring in that we'd know you're working on it - and if you had even one person working on it, you could have that many screenshots in half a day.

  • I’m undecided
Update... I've been messing around with this problem for about 6 hours now, and I've wrestled the Akai into behaving itself...I think.
It required handicapping my system and removing functionality from my otherwise stable and sexy computer, but so far no BSOD and I'm running a "burn in" test... I've got Sonar X3 recording all four inputs at 24/96 and I'm just going to leave it recording for an hour or so and see how it does.

Here's what I did. All the crashes had in common at first was they all featured "NTOSKRNL.EXE" in the report somewhere.

First, tried the Akai on a fresh install of Win7, then updated Win7, then updated Mobo drivers, then downloaded specific updated drivers for USB, toggled firewire/usb 3/lots of other things on and off in Bios, uninstalled and reinstalled everything a few times, double checked power settings for USB, etc.

I finally nailed down the most predictable ways to get a BSOD. I downloaded the Windows Debugger kit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libra... (Follow the instructions. Download the SDK, just install the Debugging Tools For Windows) so that I could go over every BSOD crash dump.

Then activate Verifier. If you don't have your system backed up, I advise you to make a restore point or quick backup before proceeding.

    Start menu, type verifier.

Select Create custom settings (for code developers)
Select individual settings from a full list

    Then check all of these:

    Special Pool
    Pool Tracking
    Force IRQL Checking
    Deadlock Detection
    Security Checks (Windows 7 & 8/8.1)
    DDI compliance checking (Windows 8/8.1)
    Miscellaneous Checks

Then on the next screen hit select driver names from a list, and check off everything that isn't Microsoft. Finish and restart.

This is going to make a lot of BSOD's. I can't claim to be computer savvy enough to know the details, but as far as I understand it, driver verifier will BSOD at the first sign of a driver behaving funny.

After a BSOD, open the debugger and click file-open crash dump, and open the latest one. Look for anything that vaguely makes sense.

Often there will be a dll or sys file.
Google it if you don't know what it is, look up what it belongs to,
    Uninstall that thing.
You may have to turn off verifier to uninstall it (because launching the uninstall program may BSOD with verifier on). To turn it off just launch it in the same way (start: verifier) and hit "delete existing settings", finish and reboot.

Now do this over and over, rebooting and turning it on and rebooting and launching stuff, crashing, rebooting and look at the dump file, turning it off and rebooting, uninstalling the thing, turning it on and rebooting, open everything ever, etc.

This might be a fix if you don't have to uninstall anything you really need

Hope this helps. We'll see how stable my system is - I'm running it and keeping Verifier on for a day or two, and stressing the interface to the max.

  • So here's my fix...(workaround) roll back to the original 2.9.3 drivers seems to have fixed the sound issue, it sucks that the vendor probably has dropped support on this. Unfortunately i've had this problem with window 7, 8, and now the windows 10 developer release, but if you want all the crackly sounds to go away, i would just roll back to the original driver. Worked for me. And if you're brave... there's a github release of some linux drivers, havent even attempted that yet lol.

  • I’m relieved
I was having the same trouble with this AKAI EIE Pro 24 bit audio interface. I will chalk it up to windows 8 and lack of optimized setup for audio production.

The interface worked fine as long as I wasn't using a midi controller. Every time I plugged in the Ableton Push the latency would skyrocket and clicks, pops, and distortion would result.

After many attempts to solve it and some hearing damage on the way, I believe I have resolved the issues with these key things:
    1) Downloaded lastest drivers from the AKAI website.
    2) Followed basically all of the advice Ableton gave on this website: https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/o...

Now I am able to run the AKAI EIE Pro with very low latency and all of the problems with distortion, clicks and pops are gone. I'm using my Ableton push and there haven't been any serious issues anymore. YAY!

  • In my case I have windows 8.1, thuss the 8.1 drivers (2.9.64).
Using FL studio 10, Everytime I add a vst or delete a vst the sound gets heavily distorted and stays so, untill I set the buffer size to another Or hit 'tripple buffer' button Or reset the device manually. So I had it send back to thomann with the details of the error, including links to forums, because I couldn't trade it for another soundcard anymore. They send it back saying that the indicated defect could not be detected.
Now before I sent it, I had a laptop with windows 7 and now i have a 8.1 pc, and the same problems are present. Also earlier I sent an e-mail to Akai still without a response.
I think selling it is like letting someone else go through all this as well.. 'here ya go, give me your money and the akai will take your time.'

    • i bought this unit for at least 3 reasons: 1 - it was akai; 2 - it had vu meters and 3 cos of the usb inputs - oh it was also cheap on sale for AUS$229 at australia's end of financial years sales (down from A$600 and now back to A$400.) i run it under win7 for reason (now) 8.3. it does bsod occasionally, more often it just stops working and i i have restart it and my pc several times (random times) before it will start again. also the latency kinda sucks for any akai product that puts "pro" after its name. 2 friends have wanted this (because it does look good) - in both cases i said "please don't - buy something from focusrite" - it pains me that a company such as akai that has such a (well-derserved) legacy should not properly support something being sold under their name

  • I’m very disappointed
I have the EIE Pro for about 4 years now. But the last 3 have being HORRIBLE. There's no reliable update for drivers, and bugs are constant. With El Captain makes the mac reboot when comes out of sleeping. Bit-crushing sound is constant. All the computer crashing caused one of my external hardrives (not plugged into the interface) to crash and I've lost 2TB of work.

If anyone is reading this simply don't buy it, if you have it be careful because can potentially damaged your hardware. For a year now I'm saying to students, clients and anyone who asks me to not get any product from Akai.
And don't be hopeful that AKAI will solve this, as I said, 3 years have passed and they simply prefer sit on their hands.

    Good luck y'all

  • I have the same identical problem with AKAI EIE PRO. I have a PC with windows 10, it's a computer that I use mainly to play games and make audio editing.

Processor: Intel i5 4590 with 8 GB of RAM
My default audio format is 24 bits, 44100 Hz
Audio latency settings: 256 samples (7.3 ms - 17.6 ms).

Randomly, especially when I play videogames or I watch streaming videos, an annoying "pop" sound appears. My system is fully updated and the "pop" of which I speak continue to persist even if I change the settings above.

What I was told from the assistance is to change operating system.
This of course is the WORST purchase in terms of hardware I've ever done.
If you search the internet, of cases like ours there are many.
    Congratulations indeed AKAI.

I use Albeton Live 9 Suite and OS X 10.10.
My Akai EIEpro cracks the sound, makes bit noises and suddenly stops working. To make it usable again I have to turn it of, turn it on again and then reorganize the input and output preferences of the DAW.
I've noticed that when I start using VST’s the problem is even worse.
I already re-installed the driver (3.2.0) and the firmware (1.0.4k1).
