  • Howdy - thought I'd revive this thread, bought a MPK mini today to use with GarageBand '11, same problem.

Much Googling tells me GB's MIDI mapping is lacking.

I'm looking to just do some manual work with the pads over some loops, using the built-in 808 in GB's drum kits, as a software instrument track.

The mini will have pads fire according to the stock presets (1-4), but changing the MIDI note name/number has no effect on the pad. Sounds assigned to keys can be transposed using the octave buttons on the mini, but the only thing that affects pad assignment is the 1-4 presets in the editor. Saving/reloading presets has no affect, either.

Heh... should I just buy Logic? Was kinda hoping I could do this without having to drop more $ or mess with plug-ins.

    Thanks!

  • OK... first off, some disclaimers:

    * I'm not a total noob to MIDI, but by no means an expert either.

    * I know GarageBand is kind of a toy, but I relented after all these years and dropped the $$$ for Logic Pro yesterday, with the exact same results. I haven't tried the new editor with LP yet, only because I'm completely overwhelmed with a new GUI, bells/whistles, etc.

    So...

    1) Downloaded latest editor, trashed the editor that came on the CD. Thought maybe having the version numbers of each would be good for info purposes here, so went back and dragged old editor from trash to applications folder. Now old editor will open (as indicated in toolbar and dock), but no editor window. Dragged back to trash.

So, new version says "ver. 13" at left bottom of editor window, "firmware ver. 240 71 . 127 124" at right bottom.

    2) Close editor, unplug mini

    3) Open GarageBand project, select track and instrument

    4) Plug in mini - GB says "The number of MIDI inputs has changed. Now one input is available."

    5) Open mini editor - GB says "The number of MIDI inputs has changed. Now three inputs are available." Select "MPK mini" in midiInfo window, click "DONE".

    6) Tap a couple pads - no sound. By this time I've read that knob K7 is automatically mapped to control the selected track volume. Turning knob has no effect on GB track.

    7) Return playhead to zero, play first few seconds of project. Pads and keys now sound, all pads are at C-2.

    8) Mini has pad bank 1 selected. In editor, I click bank 1 pad 1 note number so red arrow changes to white, use arrow keys to change note number - no effect.

    9) No preset has been selected yet, so I click Preset #1. Bank 1 pad 1 note number gets changed back to C-2, as with all pads. Clicking through presets and changing banks shows that GB mapped certain sounds to certain pads, but I can't change those assignments, even if saved as my own preset. Shouldn't I be able to hear the sounds change as I change the note, even without saving? By this I mean not with every note change in the editor, but change note / tap pad / change note / tap pad. And now, after clicking through presets, I find that K7 now affects track volume.

    10) In my trial and error method, I click the "MIDI Port" button (I haven't thus far since I bought the mini). Not sure what this does in the first place, and I see the firmware number change on the bottom right to "ver. 3 4 . 12 0". ???

So I'm stumped. Not much on tutorials out there, either. Am I to assume this is all limitations on GB's part? Is there a MIDI port thing I'm missing?

Off to try new editor in Logic...

    Thanks!
