MPC Live changing Sequence/Track order

I recently switched from my trusted MPC1000 (JJOS2XL) to a MPC LIVE. I sadly discovered some essential bits and pieces are missing.

One of these is that there doesn't seem to be an option to change the Sequence order in a Project. Neither have I found a way to change the Track order within a Sequence, nor a way to change the Song order in a Project. The only work-around seems to be to start a new Project, and add the elements directly in the right order...?

This is a workflow killer... I hope I'm making some stupid mistake, or else I would like to make a feature request. Can anybody help me out? Please?

  • Hey

Maybe this is a stupid answer, but are you using song mode afterwards you have been making your sequenced? Then you can rearrange the hole track...

  • Thanks guys!

Yes, I RTFM, but I can't find any relevant information. If you can please point me in the right direction, I'll be very gratefull!

    About my workflow...
I use the MPC as the drummer of our band. Every Sequence is a song for the band. In between songs I have to be able to select a new Sequence fast, so that we can play the next song. The fastest way is obviously to simply choose the next Sequence in the Project. In this way the Sequence order in the Project is the same as our set-list. The work-around now, could be to select the Sequence according the set-list.

I never use Song mode, it might have been a work-around though to put every Sequence in a Song with only one sequence in it.

  • That would work if it were possible to insert an empty Sequence at a certain spot in the sequence order.

EDIT: It can work when using a 'swop' position... Not the easiest of ways, but it works. Thanks!
    • ....on the main page you can click the pencil icon in either the SEQUENCE or TRACK section [xx] to save and when in the browser under your "My Stuff" section click the SEQUENCE or TRACK or Program ...You should be able to insert these wherever you choose... *hint* No two (track1)s are identical. So be sure to label your tracks to match the song. for you? Sequence 1 or Song 1 should be labeled too since you really only have the one project. on the main page while sequence is highlighted you can zip thru any of your sequences (songs for you) w/ the big knobby knob on the bottom right stopping /starting skipping around as you like.. hope this helps... if so, please click my like

  • I don't know how many sequences you have but if you copy all after 64 you have 64 slots empty...

  • Hey Lacertus108,

    Thanks for posting!

To answer your original question - sequence, track, and song orders cannot be changed directly via the hardware. There are methods that work around this that have been mentioned in this thread so at this time, I would advise using one of these methods to alter the order of items. I do think that this function would be useful to the MPC hardware's workflow so I will submit this as a feature request for you to the Akai team.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for your help everybody, I appreciate it!

  • Hey! - This is also what I was looking for - but when you Erase a sequence - it stays there empty - is there a way to actually delete it from the project?

  • Not really - it works the same as in "Erase" or Clear" sequence - it stays there as "unused" - still can't delete it completely from the project - is there any way to do that?

This still hasn't been addressed, and I think part of it is a lack of understanding the problem. "Copy, Paste, Erase" is cumbersome, 1990s style interface. What's being asked is a drag and drop (select and move) feature for sequence order. Several places on the forum, maybe a half dozen, present this problem in various ways.

The advice being offered is usually how to arrange the sequences, but what's being sought is how to move them, literally, into a different order. This is very important for linear sequencing (quick turn of the knob) and creating "set lists" of sequences in linear order (not any/random order only to use "Next Sequence" to try to piece it all together).

For example, Seq 1 is "Intro01", Seq 2 is "Verse1" and Seq 3 is "Verse2" and Sequence 4 is "Chorus". But now, I want to create the following sequence sequence: "Intro01" then "Verse1" then "Chorus" then "Verse2". The only way I've been able to figure out how is the "hard way" which is manually copying and then going back and deleting, etc., to move sequences around in this fashion. Even the MPC software doesn't allow it. Ideally, it would occur in standalone mode, by way of some relatively simple select and move feature. But even in MPC software, where the "Next Sequence" window/workspace is loaded at bottom of screen, and the "Sequence List" appears, it should allow drag and drop.

Remember, not everyone has the same workflow and the redeeming quality of the Live is its flexibility. What's being requested here -- a simple way to easily sort and order sequence files -- is not esoteric or unorthodox.

I think (I hope) we are all missing something here. Even very old sequencers I've used included some feature to simply move sequences (or patterns, if that was the vocabulary) around in order -- literally move them, not just arrange them in "Next Sequence" or "Song" mode (which act more as "pointers" to tell the software which sequence to load next).

    Thank you-Scott

    • if you save all 100 sequences with a name you can start a new project with the sequences in any order you wish...
    • I realize this is possible Jason, as are many of the other great tips received here. But the point is, something as simple as moving a sequence anywhere in a list should be standard workflow. Most people seem to agree.

It's ridiculous that sequence resorting isn't a feature. I was composing an entire song, composed of the following sequences: IntroA, IntroB, Verse1A. Verse1B. Chorus1. Verse2A. Verse2B. Chorus2. BridgeA. BridgeB. Chorus3.

Now, if I want to add in an instrumental break between Chorus1 and Verse 2A, I have to copy/paste/erase the succeeding six sequences? The MPC Live's a phenomenal machine, but there are some seriously head-scratching GUI design decisions made here.

    • Jason Blackwell: You're not understanding how simple this could be,

Moving should just be: Tap the Sequence pencil tool. Tap "Move Sequence". A list view of all the sequences shows up, with dialogue saying "Move the selected sequence before...". Scroll to where you want to move your active sequence, and tap the listed sequence that will follow it. Your active sequence now slots in front of that sequence.

Or how about swapping sequences? It could go like this: Open up the Song view, for instance, where all sequences are listed. If they added a "Swap" function, you could select a sequence (say #3), press "Swap", press the target sequence (say #10), and press "Do it". Now 3 is 10 and 10 is 3.

It took me far longer to type this than it would actually take to do it. The whole copy/paste/erase thing is not only cumbersome, but opens you up to human error. You could accidentally erase or copy over a sequence you don't want destroyed. Yes, you should be careful, but sometimes... stuff happens. Especially when you're copying and pasting sequences, since they'll have the same name after copy/pasting.

Along with a Swap or Move feature, they should add in an "Sequence Insert" feature. Tap the sequence pencil tool, tap "Insert Seq", and then it would give you the option to insert a brand new sequence between two other sequences.

This is not groudbreaking GUI stuff.

Ok, I praise for this one as well. This is silly. Touch screen, modern hardware and only old style copy paste solution. ??? Thanks for fixing this Akai.

  • I really need this feature as well.. Especially Track MOVE in a Sequence!

Or at least to remove a track that you delete from the sequence.

I don't get the point to say that's not useful @Nick.
To build a Live (MPC Live is all about) this is a primordial feature to improve the workflow on stage.. Sometime you need to change the order .. Whatever workflow suits the best for everyone

    I don't believe it's a difficult request to implement.
