MPC Live update schedule

Lets admit it - the MPC Live is quite unbaked but we all expected to be like this when preordering.... :-)
The obvious question I have is when a new firmware, fixing some of the reported bugs will be released? Could you please share what are the plans for getting the devices in shape?

Thanks!

  • Hey marek,

    Thanks for posting!

I understand that some users have run into trouble but I think it is fair to say that the MPC Live is a pretty darn capable machine as it stands! While I have no specifics as to what updates are planned, I can assure you that the Akai team is diligently pouring over all the great feedback we are receiving from our user base and are still very interested in the feedback you may have. Be sure to submit your thoughts, concerns, opinions, etc. via the MPC 2.0 beta software's feedback module. All this information goes straight to the Akai team!

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Better to have a schedule of updates that you can stick to !!!!

I was mad AF while waiting for the LIVE to be released.. I at one point said I would gladly pay 1200 to have the version I was seeing demoed all over the internet...

despite the occasional dead button or lack of audio once every 20 uses im glad to have the machine cuz ive been doing a lot of stuff that I couldn't with the OP1.... all those tracks.... unlimited sequence length and even starting sequences in the middle etc....4 efx per pad, per track ... that's 8 fx to a sound.... plus up to 4 layers per pad..... whats to complain about?

I go on the presumption that the updates will close these performance gaps.... as it is now the LIVE is blowing the Electribe out of the water and exceeds the OP1 which is a superb machine.
    • When it comes to something carrying the name MPC, I would expect a lot more than trumping peripheral "Toys" like the Electribe and OP1
    • My op1 never crashed on me, like ever. I love when people call them toys, a pretentious word for a piece of gear that does so much. Like everyone with an OP-1 is playing super mario and everyone with an MPC like is rocking monocles and drinking tea out of antique tea cups. Gimmie a break. Get one then change your opinion, or if you already have one then you spent 900 bucks on something you consider a toy, have fun with that. Thought music was supposed to be fun anyways. Same argument as in the 60's 70's when musicians hated synthesizers cause it was considered fake music. They were also considered "toys". MPC is awesome but until they get it stable, its not necessarily a toy, but close enough.

  • I'm really struggling personally. I get all kinds of glitches when changing basic parameters like pad pitch :/ it will just snap back to zero, then suddenly minus three, then suddenly zero. Super annoying. It's also rejected my ssd so I had to buy a hdd and it's horribly clunky.

    Is it just my mpc?

Global modulation/automation matrix : assign lfos, external midi knobs and faders, q links, envelopes, etc to any variable parameter.

And make the automation editable from standalone.

Hello Nick and the Akai Team,

New to the community and have been watching the development of the MPC live. I would have no issues shelling out the $1200+ for this unit, given what this unit is suppose to be capable of, but based on some of the responses (and some rightfully angry ones), it appears that there may be some clear issues with the unit.

Has the Akai team been able to confirm any of the many reported issues (i.e. lock up, no sound output, freezing, etc)? If it turns out that this is not just a firmware/software issue, but rather a hardware issue, what is Akai's plan for the unit already out in the market? Will it recall those units sold? Will it proactively reach out to customers to get it fixed? Will all the shipping and return costs be covered by Akai? And for how long will Akai fully warranty these units?

I do not mind being a beta tester, I am just looking for some reassurance that I am not just throwing hard earned money down the drain and be left stuck with a brick. Everything about this product is promising and exciting. I am just concerned about all these reported issues.
    • Those issues you mentioned were bad units that were returned. The working units which are the majority work flawlessly
    • My MPC crashes regularly. Today I worked on a beat for an hour (I should have saved but didn't), and when I committed the sin of deciding I would like to add an audio track, it froze and after five minutes I gave up waiting and did a hard reboot. And that's just today. It regularly crashes when I try to use the looper (so I stopped using the looper), to give another example.

It's past my 30 days to return the unit to sweetwater, so I can't return the unit. I'm glad other people's are working, although I feel like they would have the same problems if they really explored all the functionality

  • Today I turned on mine and pressed play and it stopped after 1 bar... I switched sequences and pressed pads etc but nothing so I restarted it and things went smooth...

This isn't a big deal to restart like this like once every 21 runs or so but in retrospect I really do trust that Akai will fix this in the first update because in some situations like performance that can be a real buzzkill.

I presume this to be a software not a hardware issue but if its hardware then I too am concerned about whether Akai will replace units with issues like this....

But I do have confidence in Akai, they have too much of a reputation to allow these issues to persist..... MPC is synonymous with hip hop production.

They'd better sort the shit out by themselves and not require customers to send their units back. And if they do, they'd better take care of ALL shipping costs !
AND they'd better extend the warranty of faulty units !

I agree.. sometimes I feel guilty when I read about people whos machine are doing that... mine has been working well. I know I would be steaming mad if I wasn't able to get a workflow going.... But Ive made about 15 solid tracks so far..

Im sure they'll work out the bugs.... I think theyre too big to fail.

My concern is that you may have a workaround for now (restarting), but until you understand what the problem is, it is possible that at some point the unit will stop working completely. This is a reliability issue. This is why I think it is important for Akai to first confirm and acknowledge these reported issues. Then from there, go back to their design and try to understand why these issues are happening (whether it is software, hardware, manufacturing-related, or even conditional situations). I like the idea of the MPC live and would love for Akai to successfully bring this unit to the market.

Going back to the OP, I'd like to hear from Akai to see what sort of plan they have in resolving all these issues. If/when they verify the problem, do they dig deeper to understand the root cause.

Sadly, restarting didn't change anything, except telling me that the serial number was invalid. So now I have an anonymous mute MPC. Great !
I'm seriously angry to see a company with such an established reputation and a name meaning decades of quality products releasing such a buggy, half-baked product. Did they really NOT test their units thoroughly ? Are they NOT serious enough to be trusted ? And their lack of reaction is p!ssing me off as well...

  • hmmm the serial number thing makes it seem like a definite software issue like the system is on some antipiracy mission.. refusing to open what it thinks is bootleg software......

I think they released the units maybe due to pressure from people like us who were hungry for this product and might have bought something like the Digitakt or some other machine...

But I think with a reinstall of the OS your machine might be healed.

I saw a comment from a YouTube user that indicated that their initial MPC Live would have inadvertent crashes. This person got in touch with Akai and got a replacement. This person then indicated that the replacement unit was faulty. In the end, they have decided to return the unit all together.

This does not give consumers a sense of confidence. I hope Akai is serious about trying to resolve the real issue of their hardware and not just ship unit after unit in hopes that they get lucky by shipping customers with a seemingly functional device.

Its frustrating that for last 2 weeks or so, we are reporting many and many bugs but so far there was no update to fix even the most important bugs (like the midi sync) and we have no informations about the update schedule...
It would be more than fair to us to let us know when we should expect the first firmware update... I have been waiting for 6 months to get my mpc and I don't like the idea of waiting another few months for an update to make my mpc fully functional.. (and I am of those people whose unit is more or less functional....)
    Akai, come on....-inform us better...

Please get automation in standalone mode done! This box will not get anywhere close to it's full potential until this is done. It also causes issues where you accidentally overdub a volume fader or something. At the very least just making automation easily deletable would be better than how it is now.

Step sequencer mode - Copy/Paste steps. How is that not there? This step sequencer has incredible potential. Really flesh it out.

MIDI grid mode - hold shift button + drag the screen should allow you to copy/paste/drag singular midi notes (or however may you have selected). How you have managed to leave this out is absolutely bizarre. Workflow would be hugely improved with this in there.

Three simple changes can turn this product into a monster. I can forgive stuff like not being able to access multiple channels on multiple midi instruments until an update etc....but the three things I've mentioned are actually embarrassing overlooks and the deep down you guys know this product shouldn't have shipped without them implemented. My apologies if I'm being an idiot and one or two of them are there but I'm pretty sure they aren't.

And revamp the mixer section in stand-alone so the tracks are shown vertically and so you can easily edit the mix with the mult-touch screen...Vertical faders, just like any normal on-screen mixer. Such a wasted opportunity on the mixer page. Also: rearranging the order of the tracks should be possible (the tracks do not need to be grouped by type, we should be able to mix and match audio, midi, clips, in any order, regardless of track type)

I really love this machine! Its giving me more than what I expected actually.

I come from the older MPC1000 and 2500 with JJOS and IM in love with my MPC Live since the first time I powered it up. Its really fast and easy to use, I havent read the manual except for some stuff. IM really happy with it.

I have some ideas that could be cool.

One is super easy to implement and would be killer. Shift+TAP to go to Pad Mute screen.

IT should be able to stream audio and samples from the SSD or the SD. Elektron killer!

In the FX section, it would be nice to be able to move the FX slots by dragging them.

It would be very cool to be able to make 1 step ytracks, no only one bar, for extra polyrhythms

The pad perform mode has te be accesible from the main screen, like in the JJOS, you could make a chord track maybe?

Arpegiattor, JJOS has it. its just a refined note repeat, so it has to be easy to implement.

Synthesizer. You could implement instrument tracks with synthesizer parameters. The Akai apps sound great, you could use them!

The screensaver makes me dizzy, could we upload pictures to change it? And so the welcome screen? The JJOS has that too heheehh

Thanks for this amazing machine Akai! I hope that you will even improve it in the future, and IM so happy :) I might but the MPC X too if the OS is finally developed as it should work.

  • nope. there are two options -

AD - which is the old-school mpc style

    &

AHDS - this is attack, hold, decay, and sustain

i was working with a longer sample just a moment ago, and wanted it to release after i let go off the pad/key... and i couldnt figure out a way to get it to do it, the way i was hearing in my head... and i thought "if there was a "release" at the end of that "AHDS", i would be able to do it. just a normal release... unless im missing something obvious - i am a bit stunned that there is not a release function. except for the very old MPCs, i have release on every sampler ive ever owned, including my old akai racks from the late 80s/early 90s. this is crazy...

  • You can control the release on the filter section its the last parameter on the bottom right.... with the asdr line sloping down on the back like a fastback on a car the release is long and when the line drops off like the back of a VW European then theres no decay.

Hi, new on the forums... here are my requests related to the midi sequencer:

    - Midi Sysex and Osc recording support (as it was in mpc 500, 1000....) ... Hopefully an editor for assigning sysex to QLinks (siimilar to Lemur or Midi designer )

    - Selectable channel for midi input. ( it's a must )

    - CC visual editor for sequences & "Parameter Locks" (as in elektron machines sequencer )... Midi LFO's...

    - Midi-Usb out on the 3 connectors

    - Support for class compilant usb-midi interfaces (using usb cable)

    - Hability to create Templates

    - Copy/Cut/Paste tools in grid editor

sorry for my englsh! thank you!
    • view 4 more comments
    • A good way indeed to put to use those two MIDI IN DIN inputs and the USB ports.
    • Exactly! Thanks!

If we really want the MPC to be the standalone centerpiece of our studio, ( also for non performers ) we need it to be able to filter the midi data recieved from the gear connected to it... expecting that people use more than 2 controllers, 2 synths, effects processors...

We have 128 possible midi track outs of the machine.... but just 2 usb-ins and 2 din-ins... all operating in the same omni chanel...

It would be useful also to have connectivity with usb midi interfaces.
I'd love to be able to send midi to my iconnectmidi 4+ via usb, and choose in the mpc the different midi sessions ... it's jus t adding support for class compilant midi interface.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the live! , I'm not using computer in my studio so, i've expected this concept of hybrid machine for several years... and I just want it to become the real centerpiece of my studio!

      Yeah!

Did the latest firmware update for standalone mode. Still getting those MPC error messages. The last time it happened (like an hour ago) I started uo the MPC fresh, went to the audio track screen, realized I needed to go back to arm the track and once i hit monitor "auto", crashed. No sample file was in the project, just a clean project caused an error. Thats the thing that makes me really weary about getting deep into it.
Worse part about it, it sitting next to a ton of elektron gear which has never had a crash/error ever. I aint no tech genius but stability is something you overlook until you dont have it. Imagine being in the middle of a piano solo and your moog sub 37 just cuts off. OR you just spent an hour chopping breaks and lost all of it to an error. So they should maybe focus on that first, automation can eat aD to stability and im sure the only person who can say they have not had a MPC error is the only person hiding it to seem like the cool guy with the working MPC.
    • view 1 more comment
    • +1 ...I do have Elektrons BlackTrinity as well here in my studio but love the arrangement possibilities of the MPC. Stability would rule!!! For the extraordinary audio tweaking I'm safe and happy using the Octatrack (so far....)
    • Same here. Dark Trinity + the Heat and the Digitakt. I run it all through a mixer and arrange in the mpc. Lost a few takes but the best part is that its in the elektron gear, just have to rerecord. I start every project with a save and do autosaves at the lowest possible timeframe. Nice to use the audio tracks to grab things from the elektron gear time-synced. Then turn them either to samples by chopping them up, or throw them into programs as a patched phrase and free up audio tracks. I must say, for me, its a great alternative to a daw using it in this fashion, so I'd say fuck all of those features everyone wants until they can stop the crashes. I'd rather get a crash after filling up the memory, not on a new clean project. Once we get that out of the way, then improve workflow, LFO's, copy/paste in grid, etc.

What is WRONG with you people???

Do you have ANY IDEA how many defective products Akai has sold to consumers and then refused to support over the last decade?

MPC1000-Defective, Akai made YOU pay again to have it work (JJOS Saved this machine from the junk pile)

MPK (The little samplers) series- Defective go read some reviews, there was so much wrong with these from day 1, NEVER FIXED

Akai EIE Audio interface- Defective- Go read the reviews....it's JAW DROPPING,

Analog series: Rhythm Wolf, Tom Cat, Timber Wolf, Problems- The Rhythm Wolf Shipped with an improperly scaled bass synth that would not play in tune, they released a "Tunning app" that does not work, and an improperly designed kick drum, The Tom Cat was fine, The Timber Wolf has become an industry joke as the worst synth ever made....Now, Full Disclosure, I actually LOVE these and own all of them, but it is frustrating not to have the bass synth fixed, and the Timber Wolf be one update away from reaching its potential, most people hate these instruments, I do not, but they do have problems that COULD BE FIXED, Akai chooses not to.

MIDI controller- Defective- Last Christmas Akais Message board was lit up by angry gift givers who's purchases were unusable, go look it up, it's the angriest and longest rant by customers I've ever seen

MPC software- Promised and never delivered to the folks who bought the touch, who were then double screwed when the stand alone's were released

I'm probably missing a whole bunch of other ones, but you people really need to have your heads checked, YOU TRUSTED AKAI WITH PROVIDING, SUPPORTING AND DEVELOPING A PRODUCT???

    THEY WON'T DO IT!

Did you see what the employee said? Read his reply and know that Akai will NEVER be trustworthy, YOU WILL NOT GET UPDATES, Akai makes cash grabs and people keep going for the bait

I strongly suggest selling your MPC X's now before word gets out that Akai is still Akai

    Read this thread,

    Care to explain those comments?

Care to have a little contest? I'll provide links to thousands of people claiming JJOS saved the MPC 1000 and you can add all the links to people who say, they liked the broken pads and Akai OS?

Care to go on ANY THREAD regarding the products I've mentioned and explain why so many people enjoy lying about defective products for a hobby?

Care to explain why Akai is being targeted and nobody else is?

Care to go on any new MPC thread and explain those troubles?

How about reading the comment directly above mine and explaining that?

Then maybe you can explain to us how to maintain your self-respect while "Astroturfing" for Akai? And why not tell us what you're paid while you're at it?

I know "Gaslighting" is a key element to successful Astroturfing so you may proceed with that now as I'm sure it's what it says to do next in your handbook

Go ahead, proceed with the removal of the emperor's clothes

Maybe try a little "Attack the messenger" that's standard op too ain't it?

I can't wait to hear how all the voices we're hearing from all over the world are full of it, but you....you...daz, you are the ONLY MAN who speaks truth

Watch now everybody, see how it's done on 2017, and be ashamed we've let the world get to this.

    • Dam, now your making prophecies. You really mad. Well, pro-tip for you, stop buying their products. You maybe shouldnt have bought the mpc live. I mean thats my question, why after such bad experiences and the need to tell everyone to stop buying form AKAI, why did you buy the MPC live? Why did you wait to hear all the issues first and save yourself the aggravation. Is this one of those self-victimizing situation where a person drops a hammer on their foot then blames the hammer company for making hammers?

I think there is a way to long silence on the Akai side about updates for a new product like the MPC Live and 2.0 software. Me as a customer it makes me feel insecure and that it not good for both sides of the counter..

  • There is a problem with losing projects.... how much available space does the system disk require to run correctly .... i just had another project that joined the Failed to Load group.
    • I'd suggest backing up all those projects to a card or computer for just in case. Great thing about the Live is that you have the software for just in case purposes. To believe that this is completely standalone may be limiting given its issues. That sucks to hear that, I have yet to have a fail on loading a project, just those crash errors. Now im even more afraid so ill be auto-saving and backing everything up that i know i want to keep. The saving grace is the ability to load the project in the software, unlike the older MPC's, whats lost is lost.
Maybe try to open it in the computer, re-save it, then reload it into the Live.

  • yeah I've been saving all my new projects to SD card but even one of those wont open....

As for AutoSave i don't recommend it cuz it seems that if you for whatever reason hit cancel during it the whole project gets wiped... thats what happened once with me....

it seems like the projects that get lost are always the best ones.....
