  • Hey everybody,

Just following up - The information that I have lines up with what is here in this thread. I have seen the MPC Touch display functioning with High Sierra 10.13.2 with DisplayLink driver version 4.1. This DisplayLink driver version is embedded in the MPC 2.1 installer and can also be found at DisplayLink's website.

No word about 10.13.3 at the moment so I would recommend staying at 10.13.2 for the time being. If I receive any news about compatibility I will return here and inform the community.

    • Sorry to hear that. The strange fact is that according to the DisplayPort, on the 10.13.4 there should be no screen at all. However, as they wrote, on the 4.3 driver they enabled screen "clone" functionality, so perhaps that's what you are seeing now (if you have the newest driver, i.e 4.3). It is not what is required by the AKAI touch tough (ie the extended mode)
      https://support.displaylink.com/knowl...

But to be super clear and perhaps to help others with 13.10.3 that is my whole procedure:
      1. I installed all the drivers for Akai Touch -> didn't work (not sure if the reason was that I've got it connected via usb and turned on during installation - I don't remember)
      2. I installed the newest DisplayPort driver -> didn't work either (tried the trick with the screen brightness without any luck)
      3. I tried the "reset layout" workaround: https://support.displaylink.com/knowl... -> didn't work
      4. I've deleted the windows manager conf. files: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist ->didn't help
      5. Then I uninstalled the DisplayPort driver
      6. Then I reinstalled each AKAI driver (sound, touch, display) but this time -> without the AKAI Touch connected
      7. I opened the display settings utility from installation app and connected AKAI only after starting the testing procedure (after the last confirmation). Then it worked.

As for 10.13.4 - it seams that unfortunately it wont work at the moment. But guys at DisplayPort seems to take the issue very seriously (last post on they message board is from yesterday) so hope they will came up with solution promptly. It affects way more hardware than just AKAI's (basically all the USB external monitors)
    • Yeah just gotta wait. Appreciate the help though thanks a lot!

This worked for me. Spread the word...

I was having the following problem with my MPC Touch in OS High Sierra: when I use the Akai ‘configure screen’ option in the MPC Installer, or when I open the Akai MPC 2.0 software I was logged out of my mac.

This is due to OS switching to ‘mirror’ mode when it detects a new screen. There is a bug in the High Sierra OS for mirror mode that causes Window Server to crash, terminating all open applications and the user being brought to the login screen.

However it is possible to use the MPC Touch in High Sierra.
I managed to resolve the issue by pressing the keyboard shortcut to toggle screen mirroring (CMD + 'lower screen brightness’ ) at the instant that the MPC Installer software turns the MPC Touch the screen on during the ‘configure screen’ step.

I think this works because it manually toggles the MPC Touch out of ‘mirror’ mode (and into 'extend' mode) before Window Server crashes.

Now that the OS has recognised the MPC Touch in ‘extend’ mode it seems to work fine, even after unplugging/restarting.

  • I managed to get High Sierra working using Air Display but latest IOS update has just blocked it all again and Air Display say they don't have a workaround yet as its a major breakage for them.
I have a new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar so can't even try the Cmd Lower Brightness.

    • Well, apple does not care. will probably be like that, but the problem is only the displaylink driver. and if akai devices sold with third party providers, then they should make fire times under the ass. I will do a downgrade, with which software is it still compatible on the mac ?

I have a simple rule: When you you use a computer for a specific purpose (like music production), and it's working properly, don't update ANYTHING unless you absolutely have to. You can say that Apple should do this and Akai should do that, but the reality is that YOU will be holding the bag when things go wrong? Software is complicated, and software interacting with other software is ridiculously complicated. The computer industry is based on the concept of "too many cooks". I find it miraculous that things work as well as they do.

Yep. That is the big trade off. You will certainly hit times where you have no choice, but you should try to minimize those times and never assume that it will go smoothly. Be wary. Research whatever change you are going to make and try to NOT be the guy who does it first. The worst situations are the ones where you can't easily go back. Apple is a huge offender in this area, as is NI with Native Access . . . I hate that program.

    Have a good one.

  • Well, most of you are losing the point. AKAI sells this MPC saying it has Mac compatibility and even have the Apple logo but with very small letters says it works with OS 10.9 or lower.

The point is: you buy this MPC to use with your Apple computer or laptop. Where AKAI informs you that it works.

It's not Apple that sells their computers saying it runs with this AKAI MPC or other company/equipment.

I'm a Akai MPC user since MPC60 and what I and many users would like to have is the respect and consideration of this company.(AKAI)

In my opinion, this model was a big mistake, since AKAI itself can not offer or update the software to make it work.

Not being able to upgrade your computer is ridiculous and the worst thing is to buy this MPC in December 2017 and even today I can not use.

    A big disappointment with AKAI.

The minimum for future consumers is to discontinue this MPC Touch.
it's really a bad idea to use USB as a video extension of your screen.

AKAI if you have a equipment it is your responsibility to make it work with the others and still do all the updates in a short period of time to keep it working with everyone else.

or just say that your equipment does not work with APPLE.

    • Apple have been sucky since Steve Jobs left us. Their QA testing is poor for their own OS, let alone 3rd party.

There are a few people I know who have seen an error on boot with the words "too many dead corpses". Their support have no idea how to solve it but tell you to reinstall your os....

I think we can all agree it is not just akai at fault here but just the situation could have been handled better prob by some of us users but also the overall communication with it's end users who have to signup to register. There is an existing line of communication they could have sent this out. They spend enough time sending us emails to buy sample packs afterall.

Also that guy Tony from Akai has not exactly posted on here too much. It has been very bland/vague. Alas I would probably avoid this thread if I worked for Akai.

The work around that has been repeated many times on here, lets be clear on this too. It does not work for everyone (i wish it did).

Anyway for now if you have not downgraded, then i guess all you can use is the software to try craft some beats or most likely use your midi keyboard.
    • Big news flash: Apple only wants you to buy Apple products. If they don't make it, they don't really care about it. This was true even when Steve Jobs was at the helm.

  • Hi, Pepe. I don't know what Akai specified OS-wise when you purchased your Touch, but they currently specify OS X 10.10 to 10.12. The problem here is that musical pursuits want a stable tool that always works, but the computer industry is based on selling new whiz-bang stuff where long term compatibility doesn't matter. Ultimately, you're screwed. All you can do is buy a combination of things that work, and then use and update them as long as you can. When you can no longer update them, live in the past, and use the stuff you've acquired until something compelling enough comes along for you to start over again. This is how the world works.

As for discontinuing the Touch, that WILL happen someday. However, like tastes in music, people have different priorities. I purchased a Touch about two months ago because the important things for me were that the DAW could run as a plugin, and that it had a dedicated hardware interface that didn't require me to use the computer keyboard for everything. At the time I had to buy Akai's hardware to get the plugin DAW, and I now see that you can buy just the DAW software. The Touch is fine, but I have no use for the pads, so I probably would have purchased the DAW software and a different interface. Am I disappointed? Yeah, a bit. But this is the deal you make with the devil (the computer / software industry) to be able to to do absolutely amazing things musically in your home. Otherwise, play a musical instrument made of wood. Wood is still on version 1.0.

Barring new info from Akai, you should either sell your Touch, load a compatible OS on your computer, or buy an older computer that can run a compatible OS. I run OS X 10.11 on a 2012 MacBook Pro for these sorts of reasons. I have no plans to upgrade until I have to.

I'm old enough to remember "the good old days" of home music production. It sucked ass! Problems and all, people have it made these days.

    • 100% agree. However, at the moment Windows seems more future proof than OSX. It is not the first time APPLE screws up and their future plans make me worry that they will stop making computers altogether and move to some kind of ipad hybride (ipad PRO is the future for them imho...)
    • Personally, I will never use an iOS based product for anything . . . certainly not music. This business of upgrading the operating system, but you can't go back if you find a problem, is for the birds.

  • good stuff fellas. Akai should have gave all us Touch owners a major discount as a upgrade incentive to get the Live. Just a little bit of research and potential buyers are gonna see that the Touch is not going to be a good investment moving forward. Or they should have released the Live FIRST....then gave buyers a lower priced option thats not standalone. Producers who are MPC purists want the standalone....they know that. But they put a lower priced Usb based version out first as a money grab. i was on chat with Akai the other day for several hours to get my Touch screen working with OS High Sierra.....their bottom line was, "Call Apple". I was super pissed. If your product doesnt work with Apple, i wouldnt have spent $700 dollars a few yrs ago. I get that they cant predict what Apple does with their computers....but if i buy a new computer and your product stops working...and you have NO workaround for me, YOUR customer....now im looking at Akai as not caring about their customers. They got a big L. Musicians we go through alot to keep great music in the world. The last thing we need is for the makers of our tools to be out here trying to screw us too.

Btw, i wasnt going to downgrade from 10.13.2 to make this thing work. I did one of the workarounds suggested here...CMD + lower screen brightness when i turned the Touch on, and it worked and has been working ever since. Im on software 2.1. Why couldnt have Akai told me this? They basically told me, dont get a new computer. But they want me to get new Akai products.....
    • view 3 more comments
    • Yeah, but Windows sucks, as well. It may be better in this particular case, but I've certainly had my share of weird Windows registry and driver problems. Also, backing up and restoring files is much easier on an Apple. Again, the fundamental problem is that musicians want long term stability and open-endedness, and computer / software companies don't.
    • Computer hardware is complicate thing. OS'es are even more so. Apple never been good at backward compatibility - it kinda didn't matter were they were niche players, but now they should learn a thing about 3rd party companies. But they didn't. I am using apple for about 5 years now and have really mixed feelings. On the one side their hardware is truly the best (and to be honest not that overpriced as might seem, just top of the class components) and the os is easy to use and have great unix-like features. On the other side - I heard horror stories (seen first hand) from people updating their system and some important things stopped working. Once, after couple of years (seriously, didn't update osx for couple of years) I updated and a lot of things stopped working. That makes me not that surprised that Touch stops working either. What make me surprised is that the minor OS version changes API - it shouldn't. Minor version changes are only for bugfixes and security issues, but they broke their cryptographic system (hard to say if it is planned, but from developer point of view every api change in the minor version is a bug). So this time I am blaming Apple for that - firstly how they did it (breaking change/bug in minor API version) and then their reaction (virtually none) There are two different narrations in this case: one - it was done deliberately to boost usb-c/thunderbird docks/monitors sales - which Apple produces/have relationship with producers; two -that is is a bug and Apple don't want to admit to it). Akai probably shouldn't use third party technology for their tech, but on the other hand - basically all components are always made by some other company and DisplayLink worked rather good for years...

  • I lucked out, buying my Touch while still on Sierra and seeing folks have issues with High Sierra, so I didn't upgrade.

But yea, the Touch is looking like a horrible investment at this point, despite me paying $539 (demo). My personal disappointment is the lack of multi-timbral plugin support. The Touch & 2.X was exactly what I needed until I found that out. And now the differences between it & the Live (other than stand alone ability) are surfacing in bad ways. Much of Akai's marketing now only mentions X & Live. I can see the Touch losing support soon. It'll be my last Akai product when that happens.

This is the 1st I've been disappointed in a music related product. I recently update my entire setup as I was stuck in 2010, on an old iMac with Pro Tools 8.X and hardware instruments. I'm 95% in the box now and am starting to understand the frustrations I've come across over the years.

  • That was a smart move for now.

For me, the Touch is an awesome MPC. I’ve enjoyed using it since day one. If you want a standalone unit then the Live or the X will be for you. I already have standalone legacy MPCs so the Live and X never really appealed to me.

I have the same concern about the Touch getting left behind. I guess there’s no real way to know. I hope not but I wouldn’t be surprised.

I see the Touch as Akai’s only real competition to Maschine and the Ableton Push, since all of them require being tethered to the computer.

By the way, the MPC Studio is also a beast but the Touch has a lot more functionality.

Akai needs to just fix it. I really recommend everyone just start a post demanding a fix. This truly is the Apples problem, it's Akai. They're the ones selling the hardware, designing the software, and the ones that have the developer license. Ask them for proprietary drivers not displaylink

If you want to start a "writing campaign" to put pressure on Akai to at least explain themselves, you must go outside of this forum. This is basically a closed system populated by folks who already bought in. Post on KVR and / or Gearsluts, etc. That may get some action, as potential new Akai customers look in those locations.

I don't blame Apple for these issues the blame should be exclusively with display link. Apple provides betas for all the version of MacOs ahead of time so that developers have time to make changes to their apps. High Sierra was in beta for almost a full year before it was released. Apple is trying to keep us safe from viruses, spyware, and all the other ills that are happening. Their focus has been heavy on keeping things usable, simple, and safe. It's the responsibility of the developers to keep up with the changes so that their products remain relevant. Microsoft is no different they update windows every Tuesday. If they don't you and I can call it quits... the Os' would be unusable due to all the buggy software and open ended zero day code embedded in them. I think display link is so far behind they can't keep up with the changes. They were not prepared for the code changes to the file system and the display API's. They should have been able to figure out the issues by now. It's taking them an extremely long time to provide fixes for something that they should have been prepared for 1 year ago now.

  • I hate not being able to update my Os. It makes me feel unsafe as some of the updates are security updates, not to mention fixes for system related items that I can't take advantage of because 1 piece of poorly developed software.
    • I don't know anything about your situation, but if you can manage to have a dedicated music computer that spends most of its time offline, I would do so. I ran OS X 10.8.5 up until last August on my music computer and never had a problem. I finally had to update due to the whole Kontakt / Native Access change and went to 10.11.3. If you have a choice, don't be constantly updating your music computer. If you need proof of what I'm saying, my MPC Touch is working fine.
    • Yes that's a good point but many of us either had to update for compatibility for gear we use or bought computers that had the os version pre loaded.

  • Guys akai made an agreement with displaylink to use their technology. Companies do this all the time to save money on development or to not have to invest in developing a technology that they don’t natively create. Akai is a music technology company not a driver creation company. They use tools available on the market to develop applications and hardware for musicians. I’m sure that their upper management is just as concerned about this issue as you and I are. It would be better for them to be more transparent about it. This is very bad publicity for new users and potential new users who maybe be thinking about purchasing products. This is affecting sales not just for this product, but all of there products. No communication leaves users feeling like the company doesn’t care about the end users and they should know and understand that musicians talk. This is what I don’t like about this situation. It’s bad for everybody when a vendor you trusted to create an essential component fails. We have to step back guys and focus on communication with displaylink. They are the source of this disaster. The blame game is working in their favor as they work at a turtles pace trying to catch up with the changes from last year. Heck they are about to be hit with a new os and they haven’t fixed the current compatibility issues.
    • Just one thing - the changes are not from the last year. They were introduced in 10.13.4 version - i.e. in April 2018. It was a minor OS version and it should brake anything in how OS works - but it did. That is why I blame Apple for that one. If it was a major os release - ok, then it would understandable (not fun, but understandable) that some things might broke (Apple is bad at this really - every major osX version breaks even the Apple own hardware compatibility - the golden rule: always wait at least a month after major release to update)- but this was a minor update - should be only bugfixes and security updates. But they broke some subsystem signing cryptographically drivers and DisplayLink driver stopped working. And then they just didn't care to fix it. That is why DisplayLink now need to write totally new driver working in other way (they are using AirPlay now, new version is available, didn't test it with touch) - which is quite time consuming I believe. And they probably didn't plan to do that right now, because there was no new major release of OSX.

As for using other's company tech - no single company, even Apple, does everything in house. From cables, through chips to displays - everything is done by some "company" and anything can brake if Apple decides so.
    • Ok while I agree displaylink is half of the problem with way less than half the blame. AKAI has had issues with this driver choice since day one. I've experienced it on windows and Mac. Regardless they released the MPC Live and X with proprietary drivers.....I can assure you that I spoke with an Akai rep over 1.5 years ago that said displaylink was the problem and the x and live would not have that because Akai programmed their own drivers.....henceforth Akai needs to fix this fast. It's totally unexcusable

  • I have been following this message stream from the beginning as it effects me directly just a like all of you. Everybody on here is mad and pissed about not being able to use there devices or upgrading and finding that it no longer works. Displaylink has had a heads up on the changes long before now that is absolute fact no fiction. I don’t want to get into reading the developer release notes for Sierra and high Sierra. Displaylink has had access to developer code for more than a year. If encryption changed that is minor and all they have to do is change there encryption to support the new standard it’s not that hard. I work in IT we encounter changes every single day and always find away. Sure it stinks that they changed something, but you have to think about why. If an encryption standard has changed it because it’s deprecated or no longer strong enough to thwart off what it’s designed to defend.

My point is, I bougth a AKAI equipment and no a Displaylink drive, software or whatever, so it's AKAI responsability to keep the AKAI MPC Touch updated.

Where are they ??? NO respond NO nothing.

AKAI need to give us a solution, a REAL GOOD SOLUTION.

or like I said, take this MPC TOUCH out of market !!!
    I already loose my money.
    • I feel your pain. I don’t understand why support has not raised this case with upper management and have them post a statement on the primary website indicating that there is a problem and that they are working with displaylink to find a solution. Transparency is always the best approach during events like this. Hopefully a manager will step up and do something to correct the public relations issues with this problem.

  • This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Why you should not buy an AKAI MPC Touch.

Just to help searchers of this product via google etc...

It is not compatible with the latest OS and the only way to use this is to allow your mac to be vulnerable to other holes in its security.

The do not reply or update this thread.

    http://community.akaipro.com/akai_pro...

save your money and go buy a native instruments or equivalent :)

I would encourage anyone to start reviewing the hardware honestly based on this treatment on 3rd party sites :)

  • I think Akai’s silence is very bad. I think the Touch may be phased out as far as they’re concerned. They should at least let us know either way. Displaylink has already made several new beta drivers so I know they’re working to resolve the problem but we have no idea what’s going on with Akai.

I’ve disconnected my Touch already. I try it out if there’s a new Displaylink driver but it’s a brick right now.

This is why Akai has a really bad reputation in the MPC community and it’s shame because whenever I’ve contacted Akai for help or assistance, they’ve ALWAYS been great. That’s been my experience. That’s why I think this is such a bad situation.

I have other MPCs I can hook up and work with but what about the person that has the Touch as the centerpiece of their setup??!! I feel for them and Akai needs to seriously take them into consideration.

Also, I’ve had ZERO issues with any of my products from their competition.

I called InMusic, and talked with Corey in tech support (that's as high as I could get) for about 45 minutes. I voiced the point of view here in this forum. So, we should be seeing something from Nick soon.

I’ll leave this for Nick ✌

  • Hey Everyone,

I just wanted to take this time to check in as it's been a little quiet on our end on this thread.

The MPC Touch is not being phased out if you are wondering, but as we all know an update is required to work with macOS versions 10.13.3 and up.

I totally understand how frustrating an experience like this can be, as I am sure most of us in the audio tech/software world have experienced this one time or another. I know I have.

We will follow up periodically on this thread, however, the best place to get the quickest access to updated info on the driver availability will be directly on the Display Link website.

Some of you may have already seen their latest post about their Beta and the current state of the driver on macOS 10.13.4.

If you want to give it a go, and you're in a pinch, you are welcome to try the beta, but in our experience, as well as reports from various users, it does not work for the MPC Touch.

Thanks for all your patience, we'll keep you posted as more info rolls in.

    • If you don't want problems, this must be your plan. But, as been said before, there are situations where you MUST update. The trick is to do it in a way that going back isn't a problem. First, install the new OS to an external drive, boot from it, and check things out. If something doesn't work, you now know, and can plan accordingly. However, you have the option to simply boot from the untouched internal drive and you've lost very little time. You can say that it shouldn't be this way, but it's like bitching about gravity pulling that hammer into your foot.

Nicely spoken Seker, we are all going to wait until you start this.

There are more options to convince Akai that they are responsible for this problem, use all media in the field of music, and tell them what you think of it. If people read that they will think 3 times before buying Akai.

That an Akai employee who slips it to the makers of the display driver and Apple is ridiculous. As a customer, I only have to deal with AKAI. Inmusic probably listens better to their investors than to their customers.

I have decided to sell all my Akai products and look for a good alternative. Akai is no longer on my list!

I want to make music and not spend money to find out that it can't be used.

    • Take care of your heart, have a nice day.
    • Akai hasn't suckered anybody. They had the rug pulled out from under them. I don't like the way they're handling this, but they didn't set out to screw anybody.

  • It’s good to know that Akai has confirmed that the Touch is not being phased out. It’s unfortunate that customer outcry had to push their hand to give us that bit of information.

Without having any kind of timeline as to when the problem will be resolved, those of us on mac OS High Sierra 10.13.4 and beyond are still stuck.

I don’t think selling the Touch is a bad idea. People on Windows and mac OS versions 10.13.3 and prior aren’t having any issues.

I’m also considering selling mine since I don’t have a clue when I can use it again.

  • I'm disappointed ... have an instrument and can not use it !! We talk about Akai ... it's not a recent problem as it's been a long time since we've talked about it. We want to solve the thing? If this is not possible, there are no problems, just find a valid alternative that works.

  • This is ridiculous, akai hasn't done anything about this issue and continues to put the blame on apple. I understand the High Sierra update caused the issue, but akai should of figured out a way to fix this. Especially with the amount of time it's been. This just goes to show how much akai cares about their customer's and I'm going to spread the word about this and how they have gone about it until its fixed.

    • Congratulations, Jarron. At least you're doing something for yourself concerning this problem . . . which is more than I can say for Apple and Akai. Best of luck to you with your new gear.
    • Yeah I was like the Live is $1,199 and MK3 is $599 (which I just got on a deal for $545 no tax Sweetwater) Akai is gonna give me the same Sounds I got when I bought the Studio,Touch, and advance so it made sense to learn a new software as well as take advantage of the new sounds I might go grab a used Mpc Studio since it doesn’t require touchscreen and I don’t need the sounds besides I learned the MPC software, started it out on Fl Studio, and now I’ll know Maschine good to stay sharp never know who’s Studio you’ll end up in and what software they use good to stay versatile

  • J.D., Nick D, Akai team, I think we deserve an update on this issue.

What discussions have you had with DisplayLink? They have a beta driver which works with one extended screen. It would be reasonable for your developers to release an interim version of the OSX MPC software to get the Touch working with this beta driver.

Staying silent is very bad PR for your company and as you can see from the comments above, if you are not going to be proactive in helping to fix this, users will switch to Maschine, etc. We can't wait indefinitely...
    • It's pretty obvious to me that after 6 or 7 months, Akai isn't going to do anything to solve this. They have two newer products that don't have this problem, that are probably more profitable. They now have a warning in the specs that limits the Touch to OS X 10.10 to 10.12, so new sales aren't a problem for them. Their liability is with folks that bought it in that window when 10.13 was working and was spec'd as working. So, it is to their advantage to not say too much, as they are just running the clock out on those warranties. I'm sure that if Apple or DisplayLink solves the problem, they will happily continue supporting the Touch. But, I know I won't be holding my breath.

So, anyone that is sitting in Akai limbo, needs to either go back to an OS version that works, or move on. Those who's units are still under warranty, and bought it in the window when 10.13 was in the spec, might have grounds for a refund . . . but I bet they won't do anything.

  • I agree. This is a HORRIBLE look for Akai. My Touch has been on the shelf. They said they would continue development for it but after all the DisplayLink Beta driver updates and still no compatibilty, I’ve lost faith and moved on. My Touch will likely be on Ebay soon for someone who’s not past MacOS 10.13.3.

  • I submitted a bug to Apple about the displaylink issue and received an update this morning:

    > There has been a status change for an issue you reported in Bug ID 39435134.

    > The original bug report is now awaiting final verification. If you still see this issue in the next beta release, please file a new bug report using Bug Reporter.

    > For problems logging in to Bug Reporter, contact Apple Developer Support.

    > For other bug reporting issues, contact the Developer Bug Reporting Team.
