(sorry for my English, i'm from France)
Hi here and merry christmas !
I guess that you'll mind "Oh no another update problem !" as soon as you'll read the subject :)
But here are the facts...
No special reason to do this, i just wanted to own the last version before starting.
I did this update using Win 7 x64 & Vyzex 1.00, and the 1.03 firmware version.
My USB connections seem to work perfectly as i can read "Akai MPK25" in the Midi Out Ports section.
I've unchecked "Always start with All Midi Ports Open" and so i chose "MPK25 Out", put the midi keyboard on Send Sysex mode and then i started the update. The controller displays "Receiving" and at the end of the Vyzex process, it keeps displaying "receiving" and never ends.
I've tried it several times without success, and of course no firmware in the MPK anymore. Useless so far.
I changed USB port, USB wire, PC, OS, Sysex send software but no way.
I don't know if the previous firmware 1.0 could change something but i didn't find it.
FYI the MPK worked perfectly before doing this...
Thanks for reading,
cheers
Lowik

You're not the only one. I have an MPK61 and love it so much I bought my Nephew an MPK49 for Christmas. We unboxed it, installed the latest 1.05 editor and confirmed keys events were registered by the editor software. Then we tried to update the firmware 1.02 to 1.05. The firmware update didn't pass "00 Receiving". We've tried on two different computers using Midi-Ox, SendSx, and Vyzex; all result in the same behavior, the keyboard display changes to "00 Receiving" and just sits there... it never actually updates the firmware. WTH? A not-so-fun way to spend Christmas Day! :-(
So, as you can see we have the same symptom on two different MPK models (your MPK25, and my nephew's MPK49). Any ideas? Anyone?
Thanks,
Dan -

If anyone has any ideas how to coax the MPK into accepting a firmware update, please, send up tips. I'm planning to RMA this unit tomorrow. Thank you in advance.

Hi Daniel,
i'm still without any answer on my side.
Personnaly i would like to avoid RMA if this possible.
So let's keep believing in Akai Professionnal's customer service !
I can't think that such an easy operation could damage a professional material without any mean to fix it by myself (i hope at least). -
-
Hi Guys can you give us a call we can talk you through this and drive your computer remotely.

I've been waiting on your hotline for 50 minutes (from France) and it just hanged up... :/
So i call you another time and i'm still waiting. Is your technical support still open ? -
-
I've tried the UK support this morning and i should never have do it.
The operator just told me that i've got to RMA my product to an engineer that i must not do a firmware update when my product works perfectly. o_O
What a surprise when i could read on the Vyzex MPK25's official PDF manual "Firmware Update" : "it's almost a good idea to upgrade your product's firmware when a new release becomes available".
So i'll call the US technical support another time this afternoon, and i hope strongly that they could fix my product remotely, as you told me Simon.
Otherwise it would be a pleasure to share my mishap and your technical support's inefficiency worldwide... -
-
Was the controller triggering midi data in you recording/sequencing software before trying this update? Try unplugging any unused usb devices on your system before performing the update. Also what other usb devices are installed on your operating system?

I just can see that you did not understood my problem at last... If there no firmware anymore, no access to see the firmware version.
If you don't know your materials, don't work with Akai Pro...
Tons of people had the same problem and no one could help anybody here or on the Vyzex forum. It's unthinkable for a brand like yours that not nothing was done for such a problem.
I phoned US and UK from France during hours and nothing was done.
I'm very disappointed by Akai and his support, my keyboard was sent to the dealer for warranty. I pray i won't get any problem for the future... -

I have the same problem with MPK25. Excuse me for trying to load the most recent firmware. The reason is that I sometimes had problems using Ableton Lite. I didn't know at that time that Windows supports only one midi-program at the same time, so when Vyzex was running Ableton didn't respond. A friendly salesman (who also didn't know about the Windows limitation) told me that it might be a good idea to try the most recent firmware version. Which seemed reasonable to me.
Anyway : I've tried to load the firmware file from your site included in the mpk25_vyzex_preset_editor_software_v1.00 package. I 've tried it on 3 pc's : two Windows 7 and 1 Vista. There are no driver problems, I checked the Device manager. I've tried two different USB-cables. I tried Vyzex, Midi-ox and SenSX. The result is always the same : when I press 'send file' the MPK25 display switches from 'Send Sysex ' to 'Receiving' and keeps showing that message for eternity - or until I remove the USB cable.
As I've tried different hardware and software to load the firmware file to the device, it seems to me that the problem is caused by the device or by the firmware file. As you can't check the device, I'd like you to confirm that the file is correct and complete and has been successfully installed before from a windows PC.
If there's no problem with the file, there's a problem with the device and I'll return it to the store.- view 5 more comments

Just read my comments before asking me what i have done... I've both called US and UK. I've been in touch with a tech from Akai Pro in US : after giving me the same eternal solution (that i tried another time) he did not answer me anymore. Nevertheless, i told him that you advised me to call them to fix my MPK remotely.
-
-
We can't fix it remotely, only see the computer side of the issue. In your case, it most likely not being the computer, the MPK will need to be serviced and you will need to send it off.

Ok, tried to reset the In and Out. It didn't help .
Some things I haven't mentioned yet :
- I 've disabled the usb camera on my pc and all other devices that are not really necessary to keep the PC working (even disconnected the USB mouse).
- In the past I used other devices like Roland UM-2G (usb-midi controller) and TC near Audio/Midi controller without problems (except for some latency problems in the audio). Meanwhile I've removed all software related to those controllers.
- when I first connected the MPK25 it seemed to work fine : every pad or key stroke was shown on the Vyzex software panel. I just had problems with Ableton, apparently because I was running Vyzex at the same time.
- As I've tried three different PC's, checked the drivers (there's no better version available, according to Microsoft), checked the USB-connection using the Roland UM-2G (after that I removed the driver) ... I would be a bit surprised if the problem is caused by the computer or the drivers or the USB-connections.
- When I tried to upload the Firmware file using SendSx, the application showed a very polite error message 'undefined error'. So I checked the file and noticed that there 's some data AFTER the F7 end signal. When I removed those data and tried to upload the file, SendSX didn't show the error message anymore. Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
If you need more information, please let me know by mail or comment. I'll be glad to provide it. I'm sorry I won't call you, as I'm not used to telephone conversations in English (and it's not exactly quiet here).
All suggestions are welcome. -
-
I managed to make a snapshot from the Vyzex interface while it was uploading the file. Notice the Midi Out port activity. Also : the last sign here is F7, so the two other hex signs after it are ignored. This is all there is to see during the upgrade, i think the whole file is transferred to the MPK25.
-
Dirk, you said you have a camera installed? What kind is it and did you happen to get a chance to see the MPK working as a controller before trying this update? You are welcome to call us as well so we can look at your system remotely.

mr Sandeen, the camera is a built-in Chicony usb camera. I've disabled it because I don't use it. In the device manager, properties screen, the status says 'disabled, code 22). I add a snapshot, but you'll notice that my language is dutch.
I saw the MPK working before trying the update. I could see there was a proper midi connection with Vyzex too. It didn't work in Ableton Lite, but that's because I had Vyzex still running.
The midi in and out of the MPK are detected automatically by Vyzex and the other tools I tried. As you can see in the snapshot, the file is sent to the midi out. But the MPK doesn't seem to receive anything. If I understand correctly, the number of bytes received should be shown on the display - well, that number remains 00 - though once, to my surprise, it became 01. What strikes me is that the MPK 'feels' that you send the file, because at that moment the display message changes from 'Send Sysex' to 'Receiving'.
As I mentioned, I tried another USB cable and different USB-ports too. Besides, for a test I sent the file to a Roland USB-midi interface and I could clearly see that information was received because of the LED activity.

Sounds like you are doing things right. Can you uninstall any drivers you are not using, especially usb/audio based. Even with it disabled you can have some issues here and there so just get rid of it. Other than that, I would give us a call to figure out the next step even if its a return authorization. I apologize for the troubles.

I suppose it's no use to keep on trying. I'll bring the MPK25 back to the store, and I'm sure they can provide a solution.
As for the troubles : don't bother. Nothing in this world is perfect, one could fill quite some symphonies with all the bad notes I ever played. So thanks for the assistance. If I ever get a working MPK25, I'll let you know.
Kind regards,

I have the same problem and was working on it 6-8h today. Yesterday I tryed the MPK49 the first time and used Live8. Was working well but today the controller worked very strange. It changed always to the first preset. Loading preset 2-30 wasnt possible and so I tryed to solve the problem with loading a new firmware. I used 1.03 and 1.05. I used Vyzex v1.00, v1.02 and v1.05. I also used SendSX with different speeds. Its always the same: 00 Receiving. I used USB for connection and I also disabled ALL other devices. I tryed it with 3 different computers at windows xp and 7.
I read on many websites that AKAI is doing nothing over month with this problem. A lot of ppl r very angry. If u cant give a solution I will send it back in 24h.- view 7 more comments

Everything is case by case. This is why I ask you to call because troubleshooting may not be the issue and a authorized return or repair can be setup with that same call. I do not handle warranty/repairs.
-
-
When its clear that the device is broken when it hangs at "00 Receiving" in firmwareprocess and the hotline says directly that the device broken, then not everybody needs to call the hotline. Its a known problem ..

Mr Sandeen, after all my attempts to fix the problem, I returned the device to the store. It is new, after all. The manager said he knew about the problem and could solve it with an apple computer. So far, I haven't heard of him.
Anyway, a few remarks on the 'PRO' in Akai.
1) I've been told several times now, that Akai doesn't 'currently recommend' firmware upgrades. It's a pity no one told me before I tried the upgrade. As Lowik pointed out above, the manual suggests something else. Besides, what's the use of firmware that you shouldn't load ?
I recommend : to remove the download files until Akai knows what causes the problems and fixes it. In a large part of the world, it is considered to be very normal to load the most recent firmware version, even for a new device.
If removing would be too difficult : ask the responsible for the download section to add a very clear warning,in big coloured letters : 'Don't touch, it may harm your device'.
2) Everything is case by case : I understand that.
But on the other hand : some issues seem to be 'common' for Windows users. Why not list them up in some kind of check list ? Now I was forced to gather information from several websites. A check list would have saved me a lot of time. And might have saved others quite some irritation too.
Moreover : I sent the information I provided on this forum to the Akai support service too (through the 'Ask a question' facility) and the technician immediately recommended that 'your device be serviced'. How simple can it be ?
So : if your company has some kind of a reward to improve efficiency or to reduce customer irritation : go for it. You can use my hints for free :-)-
Dirk I understand your frustration, but we don't have the firmware listed on our site.
See?: http://www.akaipro.com/mpk49
So where did you guys get the files from? Can someone please direct me toward the text that you are reading that tells you to upgrade your firmware and the location it is taking you to get this file? This is the only firmware reference in the MPK's manual:
----------- ----------------
{{"Please visit the Akai Professional website (www.akaipro.com) regularly for additional information, news and firmware upgrades for the MPK49."}} -
-
Could be interesting for u if u would visit your website from time to time:
Everybody can download the firmware from your website and it will break the device:
http://www.akaipro.de/index.php?optio...
If u need different versions of the firmware look here (but never use it!):
http://www.akaipro.de/index.php?optio...
And the German website was my first choice because I am from Switzerland ;) -

Ummm , as the title of this item suggests, we're dealing with the MPK25 firmware update, not the MPK49. Ok, Daniel has mentioned the MPK61 and MPK49 once.
If my link doesn't work, take a look on your Akai Pro website at 'downloads, Midi/Usb controllers, all, and select MPK25. Then it's the mpk25_vyzex_preset_editor_software_v1.00 package. The package contains both the firmware and the Vyzex software.
On 'the only firmware reference in the MPK's manual' which you quote : the text for the MPK25 is identical (except for the 25). It's a short text, but in my opinion it sounds a tiny bit like an invitation, doesn't it ?
Off the record : if you remove the firmware, your colleague at the Vyzex forum will be very disappointed, because then he'll receive hundreds of requests for the firmware again. but hey : safety comes first.
Ciao ! -
-
Oh yes, I've followed the link for the MPK49 too. It wouldn't come as a big surprise if the firmware file turns out to be 'hidden' in the download section, under 'drivers and software' :
http://www.akaipro.com/contentmgr/sho...
But that's just an opinion.- view 3 more comments

Nothing has been changed from the Akaipro.com site since we first started talking on this thread. No smoke and mirrors here guys.
Silvio, thank you for these links i will approach the German site and have them take these off to clear up any confusion. Its not the fact that it "breaks the device", its the fact that the firmware you have may be the newest one and an "upgrade" is actually a "down grade" if your not checking the version you have before performing this action. -
-
If this is the fact AKAI should send an update-software, a firmware and a manual for it with this devices. The device is not really broken. At the display is written that its waiting for the firmware. The same status is written in the manual. I only tryed to replace the firmware because after one day it wasn possible to change a preset. Normally preset number 1 is for LiveLite. When I switched on the device there was written "unknown" and it wasnt possible to set a preset between 2 and 30. The names of the presets 2-30 were the same as the from factory. But if pressed enter it always loads preset 1.
-
-
-
Mr Sandeen, now I'm getting confused too.
I brought the MPK25 back to the store, where they claimed that they would be able to load the firmware with an Apple computer. Apparently, even an Apple computer can't do a miracle : it didn't work.
So they contacted the service center (don't know which one) where the technician didn't really have to examine the device in order to diagnose : he said that if the first attempt to load the firmware file goes wrong, the hardware is affected and the main PCB (whatever that is) must be replaced. If that's true, Silvio is right : the firmware can destroy your machine. Very original, that is.
The technician also said that the reparation is not covered by the warranty.
Now let's put all things together. I buy a new device. The manual refers to software and firmware updates. I find the latest firmware file on an official AKAI site. Without any warning whatsoever. I try to load it and my device is broken.
When I try to find help the 'specialists' all claim that it's a Windows problem, and that loading a firmware file is a very 'sensitive' process. Nice to hear that AFTERWARDS. Meanwhile, I find out that I'm not the only one having this problem. Firmware files are removed from the official AKAI sites.
And if I want my MPK25 to work, I'll have to pay for it. Is that correct ?- view 1 more comment

Dirk and Silvio, can you please send me your contact information and when you would like to be called. You cannot break a MPK with the firmware. If the first update goes wrong you just try again. Sorry for any misinformation you have gotten but we will get this sorted for you from the World Headquarters.

Someone added following comment, I received it in my mailbox but for some reason it don't see it on the forum. That's a pity, because if the information is correct, it 's certainly relevant for people who have an MPK25.
" MAybe the people should stop downgrading from version 2.0 to 1.3.
MPKs with version 2 are not compatible with version 1 firmware. When your MPK was build in 2011 or later, it should have firmware 2. If you try to load firmware 1.3 to such MPKs, it won't receive data... "
Sounds a bit like a technician, or at least someone who has access to more information that the average customer ...
What I don't understand is the 'MAybe'. Don't be so cautious : people should DEFINITELY stop downgrading from version 2.0 to 1.3.
The only thing is : they should know that they are downgrading...
Some people may assume that the version presented on an official website is the most recent one. Some people may not have found the version number of the firmware originally installed...
Some people may have downloaded the file in good faith, believing that the manufacturer would certainly not provide possibly harmful software without any warning.
I know, dear technicians, some people are stupid. Can you blame them, if they don't get the information they should receive from you ?
And finally, I think it's a disgrace to even suggest that customers are responsible for this problem.
- software that is freely distributed by a manufacturer should be harmless. It's perfectly possible to test whether an upgrade is required before removing a version.
- all relevant information on versions in software and hardware, and compatibility issues, should be available and easy to find.- view 14 more comments

Holy monky sticks are you handicapped in the face, this isnt some usb problem, I've used half a dozen different usb cables on 3 different machines, a 2011 Mac Mini Server with lion, and those of you that dont know that wont work, Then I tried my windows 7 pro machine with an i5, that didnt work, i tried midi ox, send sysex, and vyzex, i used a firmware the technician sent me, sean rearden, i used 4 different usb ports on that machine aswell, with devices plugged in and not, using usb extenders and power hubs and not, i used my macbook with even core 2 duo and osx 10.6 the one os supposed to work with it, and nothing but the recieving still, then i tried using parallels and running different builds of windows xp, the supposed os that was used to build this machine and even that wouldnt work, I dont even have an akai "pro" dealer in my town when i bought my machine so i had to order it across the country, and now ive been spending more time trouble shooting with a much more professional individual from the vyzex team who is doing this out of his time because he is just a as flabbergasted by the retardation, and even he still cant fix it, so akai, why dont you stop bastardizing (thats not explicit thats in context, along with the rest of this message, so you cant pull it) your original name and line and start putting your customers first again so you have a company and products that are worth while
